Samu Omorodion, Nigerian Enigma Thriving With FC Porto
Samuel 'Samu' Omorodion, a Spanish-born Nigerian is in flying colours at FC Porto, making his impact felt not only in Primeira Liga but also in the UEFA Europa League. There isn't any doubt about his skill as a striker having scored three goals in two group stage games of the continental competition.
Could it be that Chelsea missed out on a great prospect in the summer transfer window? Possibly. Samu was linked to Chelsea in the summer, and at that time, he was an Atletico Madrid loanee at Alaves, where he contributed eight league game goals through the season as the club's top scorer.
It was not really that Chelsea missed out, it was Samu himself that turned down a deal worth £34.5million. Amidst the transfer, Chelsea was trying to work out a deal for Conor Gallagher, which in end went through with Joao Felix moving from Atletico to Stanford Bridge.
The breakdown of talks between Samu and Chelsea was over a clause that he deemed unacceptable. The Blues intended to include a clause that gives the club 50% image rights control over the player. That was the moment the deal talks went south. He later on joined FC Porto instead for £12.7million.
Samu, 20, yet maintained his top scoring form at Porto where he has contributed seven goals in all competitions - four league games goal and three goal in the Europa League. His tenacity and agility at the front remained in tact. He was the reason why Manchester United blew their two-goal lead to Porto's comeback, contributing two goals before the game later ended in 3-3 in their UEFA Europa League encounter on Thuraday.
The combination of the striker with Pepé really took down United's defence. Porto lost their opening Europa League game against FK Bodo/Glimt by 3-2, but the striker had already given the side an early lead before the Norwegian club made a stunning comeback.
Porto are obviously getting their money's worth if not more than anticipated from the five-year deal with the player. By the way, the contract has a colossal release clause ,which is understood to be set at €100million.
