Premier League: Chelsea Edge Newcastle In Thrilling Clash
Newscatle United are yet to snap their winless run after losing 2-1 on the road to Chelsea's Stanford Bridge, with a significant contribution from Cole Palmer as the Blues close up on top-four of the EPL.
As Chelsea sought to bounce back from their recent loss at Liverpool, while Newcastle aimed to revive their dwindling season, in the end, the Blues got ahead midway of the first half. Meanwhile, they should have earlier but Palmer's strike was ruled out.
Pedro Neto latched onto Cole Palmer's exquisite through-ball, leaving Newcastle's defense in his wake. Following a fast break, Neto squared the ball to Nicolas Jackson, who tapped home from close range, giving Chelsea the early lead.
Newcastle later got on level terms with their hosts, exploiting the left flank through Lewis Hall. Lewis' pinpoint left-wing cross found Alexander Isak, who expertly exploited the gap behind Chelsea's defense. Isak's clinical finish past Nick Pope sent the Newcastle faithful into raptures.
Eventually, the game went Chelsea's way, just two minutes after halftime there comes another Palmer's struker, and this time, his goal would stand. Palmer collected the ball on the edge of the box, with an individual effort, he rounded off a defender and powered a strike past Pope at his near post, restoring Chelsea back in the lead.
Newcastle have now gone winless in six Premier League games, dropping the side to 12th in the EPL standings. With 17 points in hand, Chelsea closed up gap on nearest team, Aston Villa in the fifth position.
Overview
The highly anticipated matchup between Chelsea and Newcastle United kicked off with both teams eager to claim vital Premier League points. Chelsea fairly dominated the game from the start, could have even gone ahead earlier if not for the ruling out of Plamer's strike for an offside position. Newcastle found the game difficult to crack even as Isak made a significant impact at the front from the earlier stage and his equalizer was not enough to see the side through the game
Palmer remained a prominnet player in the Blues and rewarded for his contributions with the winner. There was a sense of discipline in the squad, formidable to maintain dominance against the Magpies' effort to play through the centre field and get past.
