Libya Bag Fines As CAF Resolves Dispute With Nigeria Super Eagles
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Committee has handed down a decisive ruling in the dispute surrounding the abandoned Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Libya and Nigeria.
CAF announced that Libya has been fine $50,000 for breaching CAF regulations and disciplinary codes. Additionally, Nigeria has been awarded 3 points and a 3-0 victory for the abandoned fixture.
The Libyan Football Federation was found guilty of violating Article 31 of Africa Cup of Nations Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of CAF Disciplinary Code.
The ruling significantly boosts Nigeria's chances of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. With the awarded points, Nigeria moves to 10 points from four matches, solidifying their position atop Group L.
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officials expressed satisfaction with the ruling, citing justice served.
Libya has the option to appeal the decision within 60 days. However, the fine and points deduction will stand unless the appeal is successful.
"The CAF Disciplinary Committee's decision reaffirms our commitment to upholding the integrity of African football and ensuring member associations adhere to regulations," said President of the governing body , Patrice Motsepe.
With two matches remaining, Nigeria is poised to secure qualification. A win or draw against Benin Republic will cement their spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The CAF Disciplinary Committee's ruling brings closure to the abandoned qualifier dispute. Nigeria's boosted chances of qualification have energized fans, while Libya faces an uphill battle to revive their campaign.
