Champions League: Real Madrid's First Ever Meeting With Lille Fails To Yield

Lille secured an historic victory against Real Madrid in a 1-0 win at home on their first ever meeting with the Spaniards in a continental game.

Real lost the game to Eduardo Camavinga's handball offence following a free-kick, drawing a penalty for Jonathan David to score from and Lille took the lead on the brink of halftime.

Real came out squarely to come back into the game but were met with staunch defensive approach from Lille and goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier played a great role at securing the side's lead making brilliant saves.

The nearest moments that almost gave Real the needed equalizer were from Antonio Rudiger and Arda Guler's close range headers, which were saved by Lucas Chevalier instead.

The defeat ended Real's unbeaten run through 36 games - the first time since October 2022 that they lost in group stages, and for Lille, it was the second time that they would beat a Spanish team at home in the UEFA Champions League competition.

Overview

Right from the start, it was obvious that the game might not go as intended for Real as they were considerably contained by the French side. There were not much of Vinicius seen in the period, though Endrick was trying to make something out of the first period but they were just outdone by Lille and David's goal from the penalty compensated for his earlier near misses.

Lille maintained composure for much of the second half, even the introduction of Kylian and Luka Modric could not break the compactness and tenacity of the side. Antonio Rudiger overlapping to the front really intensified the pressure in Lille's box and nearly yielded,
