Paris 2024: Masai Russell Edges Samba-Mayela To Win Gold In Women's 100-Meter Hurdels As Tobi Amusan Is Out In Final
For many Nigerians, Tobi Amusan was one medal-hopeful athlete for the country's medal-drought at the on-going Games in Paris. She did not make it to the final of the women's 100-meter hurdles for finishing third in the semi-final and American sprinter, Masai Russell won the final for a gold medal.
The final was marginal between Russell and France's Cyrena Samba-Mayela but the American pipped her counterpart to finish fastest in 12.33s and Samba took the silver in 12.34s. Russell won the medal in a time earlier than time set by previous Olympic champion from Tokyo 2020 Games, Jasmine Camacho-Quin in 12.37s.
Jasmine did give the race her best and the margin was yet close with her's even though he finished third for the bronze medal in 12.36s - just a second earlier than her time set from the last Olympics.
Amusan, a two-time Olympian, will leave the Games without the much-anticipated Olympic medal. Nonetheless, her world record time for women's 100-meter hurdles remained unbroken. No Nigerian athletes that participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics won a medal.
