Bruno Labbadia Abandons Super Eagles Job As Augustine Eguavoen Takes Over
Augustine Eguavoen has replaced Bruno Labbadia as the Super Eagles head coach following the stepping down of the latter from the role on Friday.
Just few days after the appointment of Labbadia as the new head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, the German abandoned the job over discrepancies over tax remittance, as confirmed by the NFF president Ibrahin Gusau.
Gusau in his statement confirmed that Labbadia demanded that the NFF shouldered the portion of his wages to be in tax to his country, which the body declined to offset. The NFF boss also revealed that an agreement in principle was reached with Labbadia before his appointment was announced.
"The tax details were never part of our discussions and he had personally agreed to all terms before the tax issue came up," said Gusau.
Labbadia was appointed to replace former head coach, George Finidi who stepped down after leading the team to draw back-to-back against Republic of Benin and South Africa in the qualifying games of the 2025 AFCON Cup.
Eguavoen, a former Super Eagles defender and a member of the team that won the 1994 AFCON Cup for Nigeria. He made his FIFA World Cup debut in USA '94 alongside Finidi, Samson Siasia and late head coach Stephen Keshi. Eguavoen will lead the team to the qualifying games against Benin and Rwanda.
