Wimbledon: Daniil Medvedev Upset Jannik Sinner In Epic QF, Sets Up Semi-final Against Carlos Alcaraz
Daniil Medvedev fought through a tough quarterfinal to upset top-seeded player, Jannik Sinner in five-set, 6-7(7) 6-4 7-6(4) 2-6 6-3 and progressed to the semi-final.
Medvedev had lost more matches to Jannik lately - the former had lost five successive matches recently to the opponent - amongst which was in the quarter-final of the Australian Open which the Italian progressed to win. The tensed match was wrapped up as Medvedev won two crucial match-points on the World Number one unforced errors.
"It's a tough match," Medvedev admitted in post match interview. "It's my first time winning two matches on centre court at Wimbledon, usually I would win one or zero so this is record already."
Even as Medvedev was pessimistic about the centre court, ithas witnessed much of the Russian recently at this stage of the tournament, for making it to the semi-final for the second time in a row. Having set to meet Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-final, Medvedev is faced with yet another uphill task against the player that ousted him last year in the semi-final and progressed to win the Grand Slam for the for the first time.
Jannik, initially was able to ward off Medvedev's strong forehand using his serve and drop shots to dictated the game before the Russian adjusted on his approach. Both players met at the Nitoo ATP Finals last year which Jannik won, and instead of deploying the use of drop shots in the decider, which was not paying off against Jannik, the Russian kept a deep baseline approach to rally up match points at 5-3 0-30 and 0-40 at the Italian's unforced errors.
"I knew if I wanted to bear Jannik it would be a tough match. I felt at one moment he wasn't feeling good and then he started playing better. I am happy I managed to stay high level. I am happy to win."
