Paris 2024: Adam Peaty Narrowly Missed Gold In 100M Breaststroke, Leon Marchand Takes Victory In 400M Medley For France
Adam Peaty could not defend his men's 100-meter breaststrole title and finished in second for a silver medal for Great Britian as Italian swimmer, Nicolo Martinenghi claimed the victory in a time of 59.03 for the gold medal. The country's first gold medal in Paris.
It did not seem as Nicolo was going to come near the podium from the get go as Peaty built up strength on the final lap. Hence, Nicolo gathered pace on his stroke on the second lap, closed the gap, and on the finishing stroke pipped Peaty to make it quickest by the margin of 0.02
For two consecutive Olympic Games, Peaty had dominated the event winning gold medal in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. This event will be the Briton's third Olympic appearance, and though he could not make the hat-trick, it was close-shave with Nicolo. In third for Bronze medal was Amrican swimmer Nic Fink.
Earlier, in a separate event, Max Litchfield set a new British record for men's 400-meter individual Medley but finished fourth in the final for which France's Leon Marchand claimed the gold medal in 4:002.95. In second for the silver medal was Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita and American swimmer Carson Foster won the bronze medal.
