Japan Drops Women's Gymnastic Team Captain From Paris Olympic Games Over Misconduct

As countries countdown to the opening day of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Japanese Gymnastics Association (JGA) has withdrawn the captain of their women's gymnastic team, Shoko Miyata over misconduct unacceptable to the team.

Shoko was withdrawn after being caught smoking and drinking at separate locations, which the body deemed contravened the team's code of conduct. The decision to drop Shoko, 19, was unanimously accepted by the team.

The Games is scheduled to commence in Paris this weekend and Shoko who is a bronze medalist on the balance beam from the 2022 World Artistic Gymnastic Championships was meant to captain the team at the Olympics. She was sighted at two separate locations in Tokyo drinking and smoking, according to reports.

Japan is one of the favourite teams in gymnastics. Daiki Hashimoto from their men's team won the gold medal in men's all-round, men's floor exercise, men's horizontal bar and all other categories in Artistic Gymnastics at the Olympic Games 2020 in Tokyo. Daiki, then 19, became the youngest men's artistic gymnastics individual all-round champion in history.
