Euro 2024: Spain Knockout Germany With Thrilling Late Comeback To Progress To Semi-final

 


Germany have been eliminated from the UEFA Euro 2024 Championship in the quarter-final as the host team lost 2-1 to Spain from Mikel Merimo's extra-time header.  

Spain took the lead as Dani Olmo latched into the box and blasted home Lamine Yamal's cross following a fast break few minutes after halftime. Germany restored the deadlock near the stoppages as they leveled the scores following Kimmich's header pass for Florian Wirtz to blast home from inside the six-yard box. 

As the game entered into extra-time, Merimo leapt for Olmo's cross and pounded a stunning header that neatly beat Manuel Manuel to the top corner of the goal for the winning goal. 

Until now, Spain have not conceded a goal from any player - they only goal they had conceded was from an own goal. As the game was went the distance, Germany were managing to hold off an early elimination as no host team had gone out but Spain struck in the 120th minutes to secure the victory. 

Spain later lose Dani Carvajal to a red card offense after he commited second yellow card offence. They now will proceed to the semi-final and will face the winner between France and Portugal 

Overview 

Hard-earned comeback from Germany on the brink of stoppages but Spain held on against the resurgent of their opponents to find the stunner from Merimo's header. For much of the second half, Germany seemed to have gained adequate control of the game with substitutes like Niclas fulkrug and Florian making strong impact on the gameand had near misses. 

In terms of chances, Germany for many times were near getting ahead after Florian's equalizer. The Spainiards were able to keep the scoreline even for mainatining discipline at the back. Merimo had just come on for Nico William in the 80th minutes and produced the winning goal later on. 

Great contribution from the Spainsh teenager, Lamine Yamal, who produced the assist that led to the opening goal. The teenager was greatly influencial in the first half dominace by the Spainiards.
