Euro 2024: Germany Near Qualifying For Knockouts After Hungary Defeat

With two games in the hand won back-to-back, Germany have edged closer to securing their place in the knockout stages of the Euro 2024 after they defeated Hungary 2-0 in Stuttgart in the second game of the group stage.

Jamal Musiala became the first player in this tournament to score back-to-back when he opened goal, steering home Ilkay Gundogan's loose pass from inside the six-yard box. Though the goal was deemed from a foul by the Hungarian side but the referee upheld his decision.

Midway of the second half, German moved ahead again, and this time, it was from Gundogan, who on first touch smashed home Maximilian Mittelstadt's cross from the left which sealed the victory for the side.

Having won the opening game by a wide-margin of 5-1, Germany are now the leaders of group A on six points followed by Switzerland who are second on four points.

Overview

The German were not as dominant as they were from their opening game, still were well to do and secured the needed points to stay in the lead of their group. Hungary knew what losing would mean for them and did put up resilient to possibly get something out of the game which eluded the side.

Musiala was really instrumental to the Germans performance, and likewise, Gundogan who was involved in the build up to Musiala's opener before setting the side off in the lead. The Hungarian were quick on the ball but their finish was not blunt enough to deliver the goal.
