Euro: 2024: Belgium Progress To Last 16 With Narrow Goalless Draw Against Ukraine
Belgium are through to the Last 16 of the UEFA Euro 2024 but in second place behind Romania after narrowly holding down to a goalless draw against Ukraine in the last group game.
It was not an easy game for Belgium as a loss would mean their exit. Meanwhile, for Ukraine, winning was important. Even at loss from a draw,, Ukraine did have fair share of scoring chances just as the Belgians did between Kevin de Bruyne and Lukaku, who missed making a contact with the former's through pass to finish off the ball from close range.
Beligium were almost caught on a counter by the Ukrainian forward Roman Yaremchuk whose cross missed on rushing Artem Dovbyk in front of the box. It was their neatest chance in the first half and Yaremchuk should have made an attempted instead. Both teams fairly shared the game possession through bothb halves but Ukraine stood the better chnnce of going ahead.
Amongst moments that could have turned the tide for the Ukranians was the moment in the stoppages when Ruslan Malinovskyi dribbled his way into the Belgian's 18-yard box but fired the ball straight to Koen Casteels.
Romania in a separate also played 1-1 draw against Slovenia, and leaving all the teams in Group B to share four points apiece, which gave Slovenia a qualification slot to the Last 16 in best third place.
