Euro 2024: Austria Move Up In Group Standings After Neatly Beating Poland

Poland are technically on their way out of the Euro 2024 after losing 3-1 to Austria in the second group stage in Berlin, and the latter have now moved up to second place of Group D.

Austria took an early lead from Gernot Trauner's header following a throwing in and the Polish side leveled the game in a set piece with Krzysztop Piatek finishing off a loose ball from a set of moments in the box on the half hour of play.

As the game past a hour of play, the Austrians broke again as Alexander Prass moved in from the left and let a through ball to Christoph Braumgartner, who while amidst defenders side-footed the ball into the back of the net. The game was later sealed as Arnautovic was dropped in the box by Szczesny for a penalty, which he converted for the winning goal.

Though Poland lost the game, Piatek's goal was his 12th international goal in 30 caps for his country and also his first goal in this Championship. Technically, Poland are near exiting the competition as they sit pointless at the bottom of Group D from two previous games while Austria are now second with three points.

Overview

With a well-composed and compacted team, Austrians saw the game through for a convincing but hard-fought victory against the Polish side. Lewandowski could not undo the fate of his Polish side while Arnautovic led his side through and to be a contender for a qualifier to the knockout stages.

Poland set back can be blamed on moments of careless defending, still that was not to say that the build ups to the Austrians' goal were brilliantly crafted. Unlike their counterparts, they neatly break into the box and made something out of scoring moments.
