Chelsea held off home defeat to Manchester United with a late comeback that saw Cole Palmer scoring a hat-trick, two out of which were in the stoppages and sealed off 4-3 victory for the side at Stanford Bridge.
Conor Gallagher had put Chelsea ahead with an opening goal in the fourth minutes and Palmer doubled the lead scoring from a penalty drawn from Anthony's tackle before United made a comeback to force a draw before halftime.
Moises Caicedo's defensive flop handed out a quick break for United as Alejandro Gernacho picked up the loose ball and latched on into the box before steering the ball into the back of the net. The scores was later leveled as Diogo Dalot's cross was headed home by Bruno Fernandes.
Upon their return from halftime break, Antony set off Gernacho for a strike and he sent the ball right into the back of the net for United's third goal. Chelsea later equalised in the stoppages with Palmer scoring from a penalty, and a minute later, he scored the fourth goal for a hat-trick blasting a loose pass from Enzo Fernandez into the net for the winning goal.
Dismayed United players were stunned as Chelsea went away with the maximum points. Palmers goal third goal was in the 100th minutes and potentially the player's latest goal of his career.
Overview
It was nothing short of disappointing for United to have lost the game after making an impressive comeback from two goals down. Dalot's penalty was the spoiler alert, frustration kicking in thereafter instead of defending the remaining points they had just made the matter worse off.
Erik hen Tag making a substitution for Gernacho with Mason Mount didn't really cause the loose defense as the English player made impact on the game inspiring a fast break before they let it all slide.
Chelsea had themselves at fault for the comeback and Calceido's erroneous back-pass set off the rally for United. However, the victory made up for the error in the end and Palmers got most of the goals which came out United handing out two penalties in a single match.
United did not play poorly and Gernacho really made a plausible contribution to the game besides the two goals score. Mauricio Pocchettino late decision with Madueke coming on eventually set off the comeback.
