Premier League: Arsenal Hold Off Tottenham Comeback To Sustain Title Race

Arsenal have kept the pressure on the Premier League title race and managed to hold off a comeback with a narrow 3-2 victory against Tottenham Hotspur in the North London derby.

Spurs began to trail their opponents from the first quarter of the game with Pierre-Emile Hijberg nodding home Bukayo Saka's corner for an own goal. The winger, Saka later doubled the lead from a counter, calmly shouldered off a defender before guiding a left shot past Guglielmo Vicario.

Kai Havertz put the Gunners clear by the three goals before the halftime nodding home Declan Rice's corner. Tottenham later pulled one back after an hour of play from David Raya's poor clearance and Cristian Romero made most of the flop and smacked the ball into the net. Spurs, afterwards, scored the second goal from a penalty converted by Heung-min Son drawn from Ben White rough tackle on Davies.

The victory is necessary for the Gunners to sustain their push for the title for the first time in 20 year and by the victory have maintained slim lead over Manchester City, who have a game in hand. City will have to either lose a game or draw one to keep Arsenal on the path to lifting the trophy since Arsene Wenger stepped down from being the manager.

Arsenal have now remained unbeaten in their last 15 Premier League games and are at the top of the standings with 80 points. Should Arsenal see this campaign through, it will be the biggest title Mikel Arteta ever won with the club since winning the FA Cup in 2020.

Overview

The Gunners were coasting for a comfortable victory before Spurs switched the game up on them. Arsenals goals came off of set pieces for the lead, which they could have guided through for a clean sheet until Raya's mistake sets up a comeback for the Spurs.

Kai Havertz and Saka made great contributions to the game with the winger effectively burrowing through from his win and his set pieces were well taken, Bringing on Richarlison did upset the game for Spurs but did not just pay off with goals and that can be credited to Raya's good save of aerial balls to locate the Brazilian. It was a well-deserved victory for Arsenal and Tottenham did give the game their best.
