EFL Carabao Cup: Liverpool Win Silverware In Final Against Chelsea
Liverpool are the winners of the EFL Carabao Cup after defeating Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley Stadium in a final that lasted through the full stretch of the extra-time.
As the game was near the latter stages of the extra-time, Liverpool snapped the deadlock as Virgin van Dijk leapt for the header and nodded home Konstantinos Tsimikas' corner for the winner.
Prior to the winning goal, the Belgian cenral defender had had his goal canceled by the VAR in the early stages of the second half. Likewise Chelsea, whose should-be opening goal from Raheem Sterling was canceled in the first half.
The silverware will be Liverpool's first this season as they remain the top contenders for the Premier League title, the standings of which they lead by just a point. The side won their first Premier League title under their manager, Jurgen Klopp in 2019/2020 the same season the German boss led the side to win the Champions League.
Quick Overview
An intriguing final through and through with both sides having what should have been their openers canceled by the VAR. For the Reds, Endo Wataru was the one pegged for the offside offence coupled with him blocking Levi Colwill in the build up to the challenge for corner in the set piece.
For some reasons Chelsea were seemingly unlucky for wasting plenty of chances that should have put them ahead. For Gallagher alone, three lofty chances were wasted amongst which was the back-heel flick to Cole Palmer's cut-back that caught the goal frame.
The game also witnessed great saves amongst which was Kelleher's save of Gallagher's shot on a counter and Petrovic's touchline save of Harvey Elliot's header. Luiz Diaz was sensational at the front for Liverpool and Virgil van Dijk as always at the back and also in the set pieces.
Regardless that Jurgen Klopp had three teenagers on the pitch in the latter stages, the Reds were impressive in the extra-time against a side much advanced in age, Chelsea and did made most of their last set piece in the latter minutes of the extra-time to win the trophy.
