AFCON 2024: South Africa Win Bronze Medal After Defeating DR Congo On Penalties
South Africa are the winners of the bronze medals of the 2024 AFCON Cup after outlasting DR Congo in penalties to finish in third following a goalless draw that was smeared with handful of wasted chances.
Least of all expectations was that South Africa by any chance was going to make the podium for a bronze medal. However, that was to some extent the fault of DR Congo, who stood the best chance to have won the game particularly in the second half.
Technically, Congo really out-performed the Bafana Bafana side, and in terms of control, South Africa for much of the game were clinging. Chances wasted by Congo, for most teams, would have been goals as a couple of them were glaring enough to be converted.
Be that as it may, that is football, and when it's the shootouts, the game can go any of the sides. Plausible saves from Ronwen Williams and particularly the penalty he saved to keep the Bafana Bafana on the medals podium.
