Premier League: Liverpool Extend Lead Of EPL Standings After Defeating Newcastle
Liverpool have gone three points clear nearest rivals after winning a hard-fought six-goal thriller against Newcastle United by 4-2 at Anfield Stadium.
The goals started coming in just after the interval with Mo Salah tapping home Darwin Nunez's cross from inside the penalty area for the opening goal. Newcastle responded minutes after with Anthony Gordon setting off Alexander Isak on a counter and latched onto the ball before guiding a shot into the net for the equaliser.
Liverpool moved two goals clear as Salah offloaded a delightful pass onto Diogo Jota, who in turn passed the ball to Curtis Jones to smack home from close-range for the second goal. The third followed once again from Salah's cross for Cody Gakpo to poke into the net.
Newcastle pulled one back and narrowed the lead as Sven Botman nodded home Sean Longstaff's corner for the side's second goal. Then, Liverpool quickly sealed with the winner as Salah scored from a penalty drawn from Martin Dubravka's foul on Jota following a counter.
Besides leading the EPL standings with 45 points, Liverpool have extended their unbeaten run to 28 in league home matches against Newcastle.
Quick Overview
Liverpool, for much of the first period, could not take the lead despite chances had. Couple with that was the penalty missed by Salah. It was a glaring chance for the Egyptian to get his 150th Premier League goal but the shot was blasted to the left in the direction of Dubravka's dive to save.
Both sides quickly made impact on the game after the interval and both moments leading to the goals were not short of brilliant display of team work. In terms of game plan, Magpies depended on counter with Alexander Isak at the front. Liverpool reliance on good move of the ball couple with counter worked effectively leading up to the goals.
Newcastle did play well but Liverpool were the better side at the end. After contributing two goals to the victory, Salah became the fifth highest goalscorer for a single club in the Premier League with 151 goals.
