Funke Akindele's Film 'A Tribe Called Judah' Crosses Billion-Naira Benchmark

It's just been the first week into the year and the Nigerian box office is getting its first blockbuster film for the year. A Tribe Called Judah, a film based on true story that starred Funke Akindele in the lead role is the film making waves.

Released on 15 December, A Tribe Called Judah got off to an impressive start hauling in #133m ($.146m) in domestic gross in its opening weekend, which was first-ever for a film in the country.

Before the year ran out, Funke's film took another historic turn closing the year with #613n ($.674m) on its second weekend. That reportedly made the film the highest grossing film for the year. While, the new year is yet fresh, A Tribe Called Judah has already surpassed the billion-naira ($1.1m) domestic gross benchmark before its third weekend.

Speaking of the film directed by Adeolu Owu, the actress described the storyline as such that is close to her "heart" as it relates to "struggles faced by many single parents" and particularly concerning her own mother.

This is however not the first film by Funke to be a top-chatter. Two of her films, Battle on Buka Street and Omo Ghetto  closed in the market with #668.4m and #638.1m respectively, making them the second and third highest-grossing films at the Nigerian box office.
