Australian Open: Jannik Sinner Wins Grand Slam On Maiden Final Appearance

Jannik Sinner has won the Australian Open on his maiden final appearance during which he defeated two-time finalist, Daniil Medvedev in a five-setter, 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 to win his maiden Grand Slam title in Melbourne.

The Italian, 22, has now become the youngest player to win the men's singles title in Australia since Djokovic won his maiden title in Melbourne in 2008 at the age of 20 years and 250 days.

Medvedev, being more experienced on the track could not maintain his resilience through the sets as fatigue plagued his performance in the latter stages. Having lost first two sets, Jannik fought back to claim two sets afterwards in almost the same fashion breaking at 5-4 to claim both third and fourth sets. By the decider, Medvedev's strength had waned considerably and Jannik took a cruise through to lift the trophy.

Since the quarterfinals, Jannik had had to fight from a set down at least to win a match. He defeated Djokovic in the semi-finals, rallying from two sets down to win and that stopped the former champion from winning record 25th Grand Slam title and his 11th title in Melbourne.

Congratulating the champion on his accomplishment, Medvedev said: "I want to congratulate Jannik. He showed why he deserves this. He fought to the end and managed to raise his level."

Winning the tournament made Jannik the 12th player ever to win a Grand Slam title on first attempt in the final since 2000 and the list includes players like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka and Carlos Alcaraz.
