AFCON 2024: Mohamed Bayo's Late Stunner Against Equatorial Guinea Leads Guinea Bissau To Quarter-finals

Mohamed Bayo celebrates scoring the winning goal for Guinea Bissau on stoppage time against Equatorial Guinea

Guinea Bissau left it frustratingly late before defeating 10-man Equatorial Guinea with a stoppage time glance header from Mohamed Bayo and secured their place in the quarter-finals of the 2024 AFCON Cup in Ivory Coast.

On the last minutes of the stoppages, the Guinean side went on the attack as Quizera released a pass to Modibo Diakite on the left flank. Diakite latched on the ball before offloading a neat cross into the six-yard box for a fine header from Bayo that beat Jesus Owono to the net.

Meanwhile, Equatorial had had their chance to go in the lead from a penalty which Emilio Nsue missed, bouncing off the bottom corner of the woodwork. By this time, they were playing one-man short.

Equatorial are now out as Guinea Bissau advanced to the quarter-finals of the tournament and the farthest they have reached in AFCON Cup since their first participation in 1994.

Quick Overview

There can not be any better way to win for Guinea Bissau than getting the winning goal on stroke of the stoppage time. It had been a long game for the Guinean side, who had done everything right against 10-man Equatorial Guinea until Bayo's fine header found the back of the net.

Equatorial, from the start, maintained a confident outlook in the game, even after losing Federico Bikoro to a red card offence, they remained disciplined but Nsue losing the penalty that should have put them ahead sent shock waves down their spine. Hence, there was a sense of frustration in the side as their opponents came out for the offensive.
