AFCON 2024: Cameroon Qualify For Knockouts After Winning Five-Goal Thriller Against The Gambia

 

Cameroon made remarkable comeback to get a much-needed victory against the Gambia in a five-goal thriller that saw the side winning by 3-2 in stoppage time and have qualified for the Last 16 of the 2024 AFCON Cup in Ivory Coast. 

Having played through a goalless first half, Cameroon moved up in the lead with Toko Ekanbi's opener with a header that beat goalkeeper Gaye to the goal. The Gambia later responded mid-way of the half as Lamin Jallow tapped home Fadera's cross from close range and leveled the scores. 

Shortly after Jallow was substituted, Omar Colley who replaced him slammed into the net Gambia's second goal from Momodou Seesay's through pass on his first touch after coming on the pitch. 

Cameroon came back into the game from Gomez's own goal that leveled the scores again, and Christopher Wooh settled the victory for indomitable lions, as he leapt for a header and nodded home N'Koudou's corner for the winning goal on the stoppages. 

The loss would see the Gambia out of the tournament for finishing bottom of Group C with two points. Cameroon will progress to the Round of 16 with five points, finishing second behind Senegal, who led with seven points.

By the look of the game, the Gamble should have made away with the victory and really deserve to win as they effectively controlled the game through the midfield, carefully build up pressures leading to Jallow's leap for a tap that inspired their rally which was later ruined by Gomez's own goal. 

Cameroon earned a deserved victory but that was not to say that, the latter stages of the game would have gone either ways and the Gambia also had a hand in their own loss with a should-be equaliser that Omar Colley got his hand to which was goal bound. Winning have got Cameroon through nonetheless for the knockouts.
