Premier League: Liverpool Retake Table Top Spot After Burnley's Defeat
Liverpool have taken a leap to the top of that table after earning the maximum points needed from a 2-0 defeat of Burnley on Boxing Day.
Darwin Nunez put the side ahead with a tap in of Cody Gakpo's pass from inside the penalty area to beat James Trafford earlier into the game.
The winning goal followed on stoppage time as Diogo Jota latched onto Luis Diaz's backheel pass and steered a left-foot shot home from a difficult angle. Trafford could not get his legs to stop the ball from going in between through to the goal.
Jota was making his first appearance in weeks following an injury spell. Liverpool have now taken the summit position of the standings with two points clear off Arsenal (40).
Quick Overview
Liverpool had two goals, each from Gakpo and Elliot Harvey struck out for offside offences in the first half. Burnley later stepped up to the task after halftime and pushed back on the Reds and made efforts to level up the scores.
Trafford also helped at keeping the side in the game and Wilson Odobert was charging up the side at the front for much of the second period. Mo Salah was kept at bay by the hosts until Jurgen Klopp brought on Jota for Darwin Nunez.
