Nitto ATP Finals: Novak Djokovic Beats Carlos Alcaraz To Progress To Final Against Jannik Sinner
Novak Djokovic has set up the final of Nitto ATP Finals with Jannik Sinner after making it past the tough-hands of Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets, 6-3 6-2 in the semi-finals.
Down the memory lane, before the pair set for the court, Alcarez had the Wimbledon defeat of Djokovic on his record - something to have him fired up - and had lost only Alexander Zverev in the group stages. The Serb as well did not have clean sheet as he had lost only to Sinner in the group stages.
However, the match took a turn that Novak wanted, as he rallied past Alcaraz after establishing his control over the opening set from 4-3. The world no. 1 nearly had a perfect service but unforced a forehand to the net before winning and proceeded to claim the set.
"I knew from the beginning this would be a match of high, high quality," said Djokovic speaking Italian. "We have already played against each other four times and [Alcaraz] is the most complete player I have ever played against in my life."
By the second set, Novak was once again making a rally at 4-2 against the Spaniard, who had held off 3-in-5 breakpoint while his opponent had saved all four break advantages he had. In terms of serves, Alcarez had more aces than Djokovic up until this stage of the match.
Alvarez was holding Djokovic to deuce at 40-40 in the decider before the Serb won his third break point on Alcarez's unforced error and took 5-2 lead. Djokovic wrapped the match up winning two match points from 30-15, first with cross-court forehand on his serve and followed with a volley. There was no way Alcaraz could get a return shot on that.
Reaching the final sets Djokovic off for a historic moment to become the all-time biggest winner of the trophy; he ties with retired Swiss player, Roger Federer with six apiece. By the way, home favourite, Sinner will be making his maiden final appearance at the tournament, which he sealed after defeating Daniil Medvedev in three sets, 6-3 6-7(4) 6-1 in the semi-finals.
