EFL Cup: Newcastle Advance To Quarter-finals As Manchester United Are Out
Manchester United, EFL Carabao Cup defending champions have been eliminated from the competition after losing 3-0 to Newcastle United, who advanced to the quarter-final.
United were not that impressive throughout the game at Old Trafford at which they had just lost by the same margin to Manchester City over the weekend.
The opening goal came off Tino Livramento's initiative after he dribbled past United's midfield and let a through pass to Miguel Almiron, who side-footed the ball past Andre Onana. The second goal followed soon from Lewis Hall's volley down bottom left of the goal.
Newcastle sealed the victory with the third from Joe Willock individually effort. After Willock had latched onto ball to the edge of the 18-yard box, he steered a right-footed shot past Onana for the side's third goal.
Erik ten Hag's adjustments of the team did not pay off despite replacing Diogo Dalot at half-time; Diogo left off Livramento for the fast break that cause the first goal. Casemiro was also replaced at half-time. The Argentine seemed to be fatigued during the game.
The defeat was United's second to Newcastle at Old Trafford since 1972. More so, it followed up to their 2-0 defeat to United at the 2022/23 final.
