Wimbledon: Daniil Medvedev To Take On Carlos Alcaraz In Semis After Seeing Off Chris Eubanks
American debutant, Christopher Eubanks has come to the end of his maiden Wimbledon experience and that took failing to make it past Daniil Medvedev a five-setter in the quarter-final.
In a separate session, top seed Carlos Alcaraz progressed into the semi-final after upsetting Holger Rune in three sets, 7-6(3), 6-4, 6-4. The Spaniard weathered opponent's resilience after a tough opener and dominated through.
Medvedev is a ferocious player with a strong forehand, and even at that, and of all his experience, he narrowly made past the American in a rally from trailing one set down to win in a five-setter, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-1.
Meanwhile, it was a great effort from Eubanks, 27, who was set for a surprising victory storming through two sets after dropping the opener Medvedev to take a 2-1 lead in the third. The tides began turning from the fourth when the Russian began to rally.
Playing through the fourth was tiring for the American as his opponent won his service games with a blistering pace on his rally. By the time they will slug it out in decider, Eubanks was really fatigued whilst Medvedev at this time was easing through.
The Russian will be making his maiden semi-final appearance in Wimbledon. His strong serve earned him enough aces to keep him ahead compared to his opponent who doubled faulted (10) double that of his, hitting 74 winner and 55 unforced errors.
Nevertheless, it was plausible performance from the American in his maiden Grand Slam appearance. En route the quarter-final, he eliminated players such as Cameron Norrie and Christopher O'Connel in the second and third-round respectively.
The big shocker came when he saw off Greek ace and fifth seed, Stefanos Tsitsipas in a five-setter in Round 16. Having to play through five-setters back-to-back for a Championships fresher like Eubanks is impressive.
