Wimbledon: Carlos Alcaraz Beats Novak Djokovic To Emerge As Champion In Maiden Appearance

A new era has begun at Wimbledon as Carlos Alcaraz became the new champion after defeating Novak Djokovic in a five-setter on his maiden final appearance at the Championships.

"You inspire me a lot, I started playing tennis watching you,...you say that 36 is the new 26. You're so unreal, " said Alcaraz in postmatch interview.

The Centre Court witnessed a star-studded audience with the likes of Idris Elba, Tom Cruz and former James Bond actor, Daniel Craig and many others. Potentially, to these special guests amazement, Alcaraz ended Djokovic's reign at Wimbledon.

Djokovic was coasting to his fifth consecutive title on the Centre Court when Alcaraz rallied fromna set down and emerged the champion on his first Wimbledon experience in five sets, 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

"Even if I lost, I would have been proud of myself," he goes on to say. "To be able to play in these stages of these occasions - as a boy of 20 years old - is really fast. I'm really proud of myself."

Djokovic, however, made an impressive start into the match with a ease past the opening set, and even when Alcaraz rallied and took 2-1 set lead, Djokovic yet rallied in the fourth and forced a tiebreak. At this point, Alcaraz was all in to see off the defending champion and claimed the Championship point on forehand error.

If not for the lost - it was Djokovic's first in 10 year at Wimbledon at 34 consecutive match wins - the Serbian and seven-time champion would have equaled record set by Roger Federer for most trophy wins at the championships with 8 trophies.
