Catalunya Is "Perfect Test Track" For Upgrades, Lewis Hamilton Lauds Spanish Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton is gearing up for a showdown with his rivals in Spain and he believes it is the "perfect" circuit to put Mercedes upgrades to true "speed test".
Since the beginning of the season, Hamilton has been struggling on the grid and without a doubt Mercedes needed upgraded car to work out the pace for the drivers.
"This is the perfect track test - a lot of medium/high speed corners," said Hamilton speaking to Sky Sports. "So we should get a good understanding of where we stand compared to the others."
Red Bull have shown strong advantage in terms of pace and battling with their cars on the straight is almost impossible especially with F1 defending champion, Max Verstappen. Mercedes now want to challenge that.
Neither Hamilton nor George Russell had won a race this season - the closest Mercedes have come to winning was a podium finish in second place from Hamilton at Australian Grand Prix.
Mercedes have received upgrades and yet could not work wonders at Monaco and Hamilton expected that considering the type of race it is. Nevertheless, he is hopeful that Catalunya will be where the team can gather the "data" they needed from their upgrades.
"We didn't get a lot of data from last weekend," said Hamilton. "You can't really feel a lot in Monaco at all because it's just not one of those."
Hamilton, a three-time champion at Monaco also attributed reasons they could not compete favourably last weekend to weight of the car. In his opinion his car has proven to be not "where we wanted to be" despite many changes made since Bahrain.
