Italian Open: Daniil Medvedev Wins Masters 1000 Title In Rome

 


First clay-court title and sixth Masters 1000 title for Daniil Medvedev after clinching Italian Open Masters 1000 trophy. 

The issue of rain spell did happen and the match was delay for over an hour and half, but the did not stop Medvedev from emerging as the winner. The adverse weather had been to the Russian advantage. 

It was the Russian maiden title in Rome and he achieved that by defeating Holger Rune in straight sets 7-5 7-5. Just as the champion, Rune was also making his maiden final appearance in Rome.

Rune, 20 who was vying to be youngest champion at the event did not performed badly. In fact, he break on Medvedev serve from the start of the second set and was up to break the set at 3-5 before the Russian rallied to win. 

"I always want to win the biggest tournament in the world," said Medvedev who had not won a match on clay in three previous in Rome. "But athe same time, I didn't think I could win a Masters 1000 on clay in my career because I hated it,I hated playing on it. I didn't feel good on it and nothing was working."

The triumph will be Medvedev's sixth trophy this season and also his sixth Masters 1000 title at six different events. Others who have include Andre Agasi, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, who had won at all nine Masters 1000 events.
