Australian Grand Prix: Max Verstappen Defiles Chaos To Claim Maiden Win As Hamilton Makes Podium
Thrilling, choatic and fanscinating as the final ofhe Australian Grand Prix may be with multiple red flags to restart, Max Verstappen yet emerged as the winner and Lewis Hamilton made a podium finish in second for his first podium appearance this season.
A lot of dramatic moments ensued during the race and amongst that saw Mercedes' George Russell that was poling until Lap10 retired from the race following an engine failure, and Hamilton, who was trailing him kept the fight on with Verstappen.
Verstappen made most of the two late red flags in the later part of the race and kept Hamilton and Aston Martin's Fernandes Alonso at bay in second and third position respectively to clinch his maiden race win in Melbourne.
Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz was holding on for Ferrari until Lap 57 as his teammate Charles Leclerc had retired early into the race, unfortunately for the Spaniard, he collided with Alonso and spun off the grid to the wall. Then, Pierre Gasly crashed into the wall and the third red flag was deployed for a restart.
Carlos was served five-second penalty for running into Alonso and he dropped from finishing 4th to 12th position. That moved Martin's Lance Stroll up to finish behind his teammate, Alonso in the fourth position.
Verstappen for most of the race after the first restart, was much in control of the race and even when Hamilton pull up for a contest after the second restart, Red Bull's advantage on the straight had him shoved behind Verstappen. Red Bull yet has the dvantage on the straight than every other cars even Mercedes.
