Champions League: Liverpool Eliminated As Real Madrid Advance To Quarterfinals
Real Madrid are through to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League after winning 1-0 against Liverpool, and that was just enough to keep the side through to the next round of the competition.
Liverpool already had a difficult game on their hands after a woeful 6-2 loss of the first-leg tie and getting to concede a goal from Karim Benzema's late strike effectively had them knocked out in the second-leg tie of the Round of 16.
After series of close calls, Liverpool eventually conceded defeat when Vinicius Jr. missed a volley and tapped the ball to Benzema for the finish from inside the box in the 78th minute. The French striker was later substituted with Rodrygo minutes after he scored the winning goal.
Besides the margin of loss on aggregate of 7-2 being Liverpool's heaviest in UEFA Champions League, they yet have been eliminated from the competition by Real for three successive seasons.
