Asian Stars Win Historic Awards At Oscars 2023

Coming into ceremony on Sunday night, expectations were high for films with most nods and that included Everything Everywhere All At Once (11), All Quiet At The Western Fronts (10) and The Banshees of Irisherins that led the role. The 95th annual ceremony was set and host Jimmy Kimmel opened the show.

All the three seemed promising but judging from this year's British Acacdemy Awards, Bafta All Quiet At the Western Front looked promising, likewise Everything Everywhere, that had its precedence from the Writers Guild Awards amongst many others.

It turned out to be a historic night for Everything Everwhere All At Once as his made a big haul of awards amongst which was Michelle Yeoh becoming the first Asian to win best female actress. The film did not stop at that, it doubled up on that with Ke Huy Quan being named best supporting actor for his role in the film. Such was historic for the film that initially started off as underdogs but later gained momentum.

"For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities," Yeoh said giving her acceptance speech. "This is history in the making. Thank you."

Yeoh is of Malaysian-descent while Quan is a Vietnamese. Both artists are the first two to stand on the podium receiving an Oscar in a single year from their respective backgrounds. It yet did not stop there, Hindu song Naatu Naatu from RRR also joined in having won best original song award.

The Hindu song which was created by MM Keeravaani, Kaala Bhairava and Chandrabose defeat heavyweight contenders like Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Hold My Hands from Top Gun: Maverick.

For Quan, his role as Wagmond Wang in Everything Everywhere All At Once had already won him more than 50 awards and it was just a matter of time for him for make historic win at this year's Oscars.
