EFL Cup: Southampton Kick Out Manchester City To Reach Semi-final
Manchester City have been kicked out of the Carabao EFL Cup and will be missing out on their first title prospect this season after losing 2-0 to Southampton.
Pep Guardiola's tactic failed with Saints, who took the lead on two goals in the first half, and after the break, Guardiola had to bring in Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne to turn the tide but Saints held their grounds.
Sekou Mara scored Saints' first goal in the 23rd minutes lobbing the ball over Stefan Ortega from close range, and the second goal came in five minutes later, from Moussa Djenepo's long-range lob that beat Ortega to the goal.
The introduction of Erling and Kevin could not change the fate of the game for City and the closest they came to scoring was when Julian Alvarez hit wide Kevin's cross from inside the area.
Saints will progress to the semi-final of the competition - the closest they have come since 2017 when they finished as runners-up - and will face Newcastle United in their next game.
