Australian Open: Novak Djokovic Is Champion For Tenth Time
Novak Djokovuc has emerged as the Champion of the Australian Open for the tenth time after beating Stefanos Tsitispas in the final in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(4), 7-6(5) on Sunday.
Winning the title brought the Serbian's Grand Slam titles to 22nd, leveling with Rfael Nadal on most men's major singles title winners as he once again regained the World number ranking after lifting the title in Melbourne.
Tsitsipas saw the ruthless side of Djokovic, who cruised through the opening set and denied him a rallied in the second and third set and wrapped up the victory as the Greek unforced a forehand return.
"This is one of the most challenging tournaments that I have ever played in my life," said Djokovic who also recalled missing the tournament last year due to his anti-vaccine stance.
Djokovic served lesser aces than the Greek (15) but won 40 percent of his break point advantages whist Tsitsipas struck almost double (42) unforced error as that of the Serbian (22).
Tsitsipas did gave his 35-year-old opponent a run for his money in the second as he rallied from behind and denied Djokovic a set point at 4/5 30/40 and forced a tiebreak in which the world no.1 outclassed him.
He attempted the same resilience in the decider at 3-4 and held on through tiebreak but Djokovic was not having that and broke back winning three straight championship points to seal the victory.
"It is all in the numbers, so congratulations," Tsitsipas congratulated his opponent. "Not only to yourself but having such a supportive family,"
