World Cup 2022: Lionel Messi Leads Argentina To Quarter-Finals

 


Argentina are through to the quarter-finals of the and their opponents, Australia will be returning home after losing 2-1 in the knockouts. 

Australia did not seemed of much a threat to the Argentines until late into the game and they did have two amazing that should have given them the needed goals to get through to the game. Nevertheless, that was not to say that the Argentines would not have won as they had better chances to score. 

Lionel Messi opened the scoring with a superb finish from an individual effort and Julian Alvarez capitalized on goalkeeper Matthew Ryan's error to double the lead. 

The Aussies got compensated for their efforts when Craig Goodwin's strike from 25-yard was deflected in on Enzo Fernandez. They would have leveled the scoring when Aziz Behich dribbled his way into the 6-yard box and was blocked from getting the ball in. 

Garang Kuol could have been the Aussies' saviour late in injury time when he latched onto a loose ball and made a superb turn for a strike but goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was just well positioned to save the ball from getting in. 

Argentina are vying for their first World Cup trophy since 1986 and they will face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.
