World Cup 2022: Robert Lewandowski Lifts Poland To Beat Saudi Arabia
Poland have kept their hope of making the knockout stages alive after winning 2-0 against Saudi Arabia and their first game victory in this Fifa World Cup tournament in Qatar.
The Saudis played amazingly well, and unlike their last game, they were more on the offensive throughout the game and that was at the risk of players like Robert Lewandowski, who they effectively kept in check until he did what he knows best following a floppy hold of the ball by Abdulelah Al Malki.
Lewandowski inspired the first goal by letting a cutback to Piotr Zielinski, who smashed the ball home late into the first half, and he followed up to score the winning goal when a defensive flop on the edge of the box cost the Saudis too much with seven remaining to play.
The scoreline should have been much better for the Saudis when they awarded a penalty shortly after Poland took the lead but goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny saved the penalty taking by Salem Al Dawsari and a rebound shot from Mohammad Al Burayk.
There were multiple missed chances for both sides during the game and the Saudis were relentless in making efforts to make a comeback which they could not get but played fantastically well.
Poland are now in the lead of Group C on four points followed by Saudi Arabia in the second position on three points. Both sides need to win the next game to safety progress to the knockout stages of Last 16.
