World Cup 2022: Lionel Messi Restores Hope To Argentina As Mexico Losses
Lionel Messi has helped restored Argentina's hope of progressing to the knockout stages as he led the side to beat resilient Mexico 2-1 in their second group stage game of the Fifa World Cup in Qatar.
Argentina came into the game on the backdrop of humbling 2-0 defeat to Saudi Arabia and losing again to Mexico authomatically guaranteed their early exit from the tournament which might be too hard to bear for the team that is tipped to be one of the favourite s to win the trophy.
Though, the first half went through goalless, Messi showed up when needed most in the second half and wasted no time with lashing Angel Di Maria's through ball home from 20-yard. He later assisted with a pass that Enzo Fernandez curled to beat goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa to the goal.
It will be the first game won by the Argentines in the tournament and they have moved up to second place of group C but will face Poland in their next game. They will need to win to guarantee their place in the Last 16.
