F1 To Increase Sprint Events From Next Season

Sprint events are going to increase to six as Formula 1 has confirmed an agreement is reached on its plans to add more starting from the 2022 calendar.

An agreement to go ahead as planned was reached between F1 and the FIA on Tuesday after the governing body's World Council voted to grant the decision.

"Sprint sessions provide an exciting dynamic to the race weekend format and have proven to be popular over the past two seasons," said FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

The body's decision was based on the data from the 2021 and 2022 season which showed spike in not only television audiences but also in income during Sprint events. However, Sulayem maintained his reservations on the increase and would have preferred to "evaluate the impact" that would have on "trackside operations and personnel" first.

He said: "The feedback from the fans, teams, promoters, and partners has been very positive and the format is adding a new dimension to Formula 1, and we all want to ensure its success in the future."
