Hungarian Grand Prix: Max Verstappen Makes Stunning Comeback To Win As Mercedes Makes Double Podium
George Russell failed to top the podium in Hungary as Max Verstappen recovered from 10th position to win the race, leaving Mercedes to make double podium as Lewis Hamilton and Russell finished second and third respectively.
Leclerc was coasting ahead in provisional lead having taking out Russell and his team mate Carlos before Ferrari instructed him to make a pit stop for a hard tire. That was when the Monagasque lost the race.
The pitting would eventually cost him the race as Verstappen overtook him and led on while he dropped behind and unable to recover. According to his statement afterwards, the game plan was a "disaster" and he finished sixth. His team mate Sainz finished fourth behind Russell.
When Ferrari changed for hard tires, Verstappen was still on medium tire and that affected Leclerc's pace. Though, Verstappen dropped from his position after putting, he later recovered it from Russell.
Hamilton and Russel had a battle with five laps remaining and the seven-time champion could not be held off by his team mate whom he overtook around the corner and led on the straight in the second position.
Verstappen, by winning the Hungarian Grand Prix by seven seconds lead, extended his title lead over Charles Leclerc whose team ruined their chance of winning over a faulty game plan.
