George Russell Takes Career Maiden Pole In Hungary
For the first time in F1, Mercedes' George Russell is a pole setter and he won that at the Hungarian GP qualifying session.
Russell made a leap to glory from fifth of the standings during the qualifying session to take pole in fastest lap clock of 1:17.377s, outpacing Ferrari's Carlos Sainz who will start in P2 Sunday by 0.044s.
Lewis Hamilton attacked the race hard in Q1 for a Mercedes one-two fastest lap with his team mate Russell. They both started off aggressively in Q2 before Red Bull's Max Verstappen paced up to be fastest followed by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
Sainz was already in provisional pole followed by Leclerc for a Red Bull one-two domination of Q3 before Russell stunned both on his last lap and outpaced Sainz by 0.044s and dropped the duo to secon and third respectively while he took the pole.
Alpine Nicholes Latifi made most of the wet conditions at FP3 and stunningly was the fastest ahead of Charles Leclerc who was second and Alexander Ocon who was third. Latifi failed to live up to expectations in the qualifying session and will start in P20 Sunday.
Esteban Ocon finished fifth while Hamilton will start in P7. Verstappen suffered loss of power in Q3 and will started in P10 and his team mate Sergio Perez will started in P11.
