Madrid Open: Rafael Nadal Saves Multiple Match Points To Reach Quarterfinal
Rafael Nadal managed to survive an extreme onslaught from David Goffin by the inch of having to save crushing march points repeatedly and made it through to the quarter-finals eventually.
The third seeded player is vying for his 38th ATP Masters 1000 title, and for him, getting through to the Last Eight was such an uphill challenge. At the end of the three hours long match, he outlasted Goffin in three sets 6-3 5-7 7-6(10-9).
It all started off like it was going to be a cruise through for Nadal after winning the first set until Goffin became somewhat awakened in the second set and rallied back from 3-5 by winning four straight game and pushed the set longer to clinch set win by 7-5.
Whilst you would expect Goffin to have wane off his strength, it infact, got worst off and Nadal had to force a tiebreak to stay on.
At this point, Nadal had to deployed the use of deep shots and heavy groundstrokes. Still, Goffin was near beating but he managed to save four match points and clinched victory when the Belgian hit a forehand return just a bit wide.
