Will Smith Gets 10-Year Oscars Ban
Bad Boys star actor, Will Smith, has been banned for 10 years by the Academy following his altercation on stage with industry-mate Chris Rock at the 94th Oscars Awards night.
The Academy confirmed the ban of the actor in a statement released on Friday after the organisation's 54-member board of governors reached a unanimous decision on the outburst of rage on the live show.
"The board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr Smith will not be permitted to attend any Academy event or programs, in person or virtually, including but not only limited to the Academy Awards," the organisation said in the statement.
The ban, as stated by the organisation, did not include the actor losing his best actor award for his role in King Richard. Bear in that, he had resigned from his membership of the Academy's board of governors before his ban.
"I accept and respect the Academy's decision," Smith said told Deadline in his response to the ban on Friday.
Smith walked up the stage and slapped Chris in the face for having to joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, over her struggles with alopecia for which she had her head shaved bald.
On getting back to his seat, he yelled back at the comedian who was on the stage, "keep your my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth" while Chris tried to ward off the pain inflicted on him by trying to make jokes out the attack.
