Gael Monfils Wins Adelaide International Title

 

Gael Monfils has kicked off the 2022 season with his 11th ATP Tour title at the Adelaide  International in a straight win 6-4 6-4 against Russian opponent Karen Khachanov in the final.

The tournament was the Frenchman clinched his first Australian tour-level championship appearance and did clinch the title on a clean sheet without dropping a set throughout the week. 

"I have been training here since 2009," Monfils recalled. "I know the place very well, I love Adelaide and am very happy to win the title here."

Karen was well overtaken by the fierceness of Monfils' forehand shots hitting 11 winners in the first set and maintained his resilience in the decider saving two break points and 

Monfils was the tournament's top seeded player and the title will be his first since 2018 at the Rolex Garros Masters.  He will be participating at the Australian Open tournament which will kick off on Jan. 9.
