Abu Dhabi Grand Prix: Max Verstappen Wins Title As Mercedes Takes Constructors' Title
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix brought the season to a close with a dramatic and widely criticised outcome that saw Max Verstappen emerged as the F1 Championship title winner while Lewis Hamilton settled for the runners-up.
The race was actually meant to have gone Hamilton's way, as he paced through the laps after his first on only pit on hard tires but safety cars was called following an incident with five laps remaining.
While Hamilton was keeping to the rules as stated that lapped cars should not overtake on safety cars, Verstappen paced up and did moved up to Hamilton who was poling by more than +15s. The Dutchman, who was on soft tires paced up when the safety cars was through and snatched the victory for his first ever F1 title.
"Finally a bit of luck for me. It was great teamwork," said Verstappen. "My team know that I love them and there's no need to change that ever. I want to stay with them for the rest of my life."
Without a doubt it hurt the Mercedes team so bad that Toto Wolff was seemed furious. Still, they didn't miss out in all as Mercedes as the constructors' title winners for the eighth consecutive times.
The Dutch became the first from his country ever in the history of F1 to win the title and he also ended Red Bull's title drought of seven years. It couldn't be more historical for the new world champion.
