Tokyo 2020: Canada's Andre de Grasse Is New 200M Champion
Canadian Andre de Grasse is the new 200M champion having broken the previous world record set by Noah Lyles in 19.62 second to win gold medal.
Andre picked up on his pace in the last quarter of the race and surged ahead of Lyles and Kenny Bednarek who finished second for the silver medal. Not only did the Canadian won the gold, he also broke his personal best set in the semis in 19.73s.
"I've been waiting for this moment," said de Grasse on setting a new world record. "I've been training hard for this moment. Nineteen point six - I cannot believe the time."
The 26-year-old finished third for bronze medal in 100m which was won by Italian Lamont Marcel Jacob. De Grasse record time of 19.62s in 200m has made his the seventh fastest man in history.
