Tokyo 2020: Tom Dean Grabs Gold In Swimming 200m Freestyle

Tom Dean and his countryman Duncan Scott delivered medals to their country, Great Britain, in a one-two finish in swimming 200m freestyle event at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Tuesday.

It was such a historic moment that was first of it's kind for the country to have a one-two finish for medals in the Games since 1908. Tom clinched the gold in a new British record time in 1:44.22 seconds.

The 26-year-old recalled his ordeal with having to be diagnosed with coronavirus last year and also having to deal with health complications from the infection. However, he admitted winning the medal came to him as a shock because "no-one takes six weeks off in the build up" to the Games and yet hope to win the top prize.

The victory was such a narrow one for Tom as Scott trailed him by 0.04 seconds in the second place for a silver medal. Meanwhile, Scott built up on his pace in the last lap from fifth and came abreast with Tom, who out paced Brazilian Fernando Scheffer who was in the lead but in the end finished third.
