Lewis Hamilton Extends Contract With Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton has committed more years to Mercedes AMG having signed a two-year contract with the racing team which they had been in talks over since the beginning of the season. The deal is reportedly worth £40million.
The F1 defending champion is into his seventh season with the team with which he has won six Championship titles - his first title was with McLaren in 2008 and that was the last time the racing team won an F1 title.
"It is hard t believe it's been nearly nine years working with this incredible team," he wrote in a statement released via Twitter. "I'm excited we're going to continue our partnership for two more years."
Hamilton is presently having a tough season for having been shoved behind by Red Bull's Max Verstappen who leads by 18 points after winning two consecutive Grand Prix to be atop driver standings.
The team boss, Toto Wolff, explained that signing the new contract with Hamilton is necessary to avoid being distracted this season considering the battle for the title with Red Bull and that "there can be no better driver to have in the team" than having the Briton as the sport heads for a new era in 2022.
He added, "We are relishing the battle we have on our hands this year - and that's why we also wanted to agree this contract early.
