Spanish Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton Wins Race As He Coasts To Reaching 100 Milestone
Lewis Hamilton is on course to become the first driver ever in Formula 1 history to reach the milestone of 100 race wins after winning his third race of the season at the Spanish Grand Prix. Earning the victory took an effort from him to recover from trailing Max Verstappen and stamped his dominance of the circuit over his Red Bull rival.
Verstappen snatched the lead from Hamilton from the first lap but was later outpaced by the championship title-defender, who recovered the 21-second deficit in 18 laps to finish quickest in 1:33:07.680sec. The Red Bull driver held on to his position to finish second.
Explaining how he worked out getting past his rival, Hamilton said he had to make a tough decision of making two pit stops based on his team's instruction. Trusting the team on that strategy later worked out the victory and he was overwhelmed with joy.
"I was really conflicted, do I come in or ignore the call?" he narrated. "I did what the team asked because there is trust between us. Remarkably job by everyone in this team. What a day."
As Hamilton continues to lead the season driver's standing in the quest for his eighth world championship title, he set a remarkable feat for the all-time biggest pole after winning his 100th at the qualifying. Today's victory marked the 98th race wins of his career.
