Spanish GP Qualifing: Lewis Hamilton Reaches 100th Pole

Lewis Hamilton has become Formula 1's all-time biggest pole winner after winning his 100th at the Spanish Grand Prix qualifying narrowly edging out his Red Bull rival Max Verstappen.

The Briton became the first driver ever to reach centunarian milestone in F1 pole history and his edging closer to making the same feat in Grand Prix race in having won his 97th race in Portugal. He clinched the pole in Spain by finishing 0.036sec quicker than Verstappen who was trailed by Mercedes' Valterri Bottas.

"100 POLES! I can't even begin to describe how this feel," said the F1 championship title defender. "I feel so humbled and very grateful. This feels like my first win all over again."

Verstappen entered the final qualifier as the favourite having led the previous sessions by setting a stunning lap in Q2 but had a difficult time in Q3 which he blamed on anxiety and poor decisions.

"I made some changes, I had a bit of anxiety about the changes we were going make," recalled the Dutch pilot. "You always try to make them better but it's a bit of a gamble. It was my call in the end."

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc delivered an impressive performance finishing fourth following by his teammate Carlos Sainz in fifth. Meanwhile, the Monegasques was trailing his teammate before he improved and nipped Carlos by 0.12sec to take the lead to finish fourth.
