Naomi Osaka Pulls Out Of French Open
Naomi Osaka has pulled out of the French Open following her controversial refusal to grant any media interview ahead of the tournament.
The world-ranked number two player was initially issued a $15,000 fine and was warned she could be expelled from the tournament if she maintained her stance of not avoid any interview from the press. She cited that her reason to do so was based on protecting her mental health.
Announcing her withdrawal from the tournament via an update on Twitter, she clarified that she didn't want to be a "distraction" to other players over her dispute with honoring a press conference.
"I think now the best thing for the tournament, the other players and my well-being is that I withdraw so that everyone can get to focusing on the tennis going on in Paris," she announced.
Naomi, the second-seeded player, had already won her opening match against Romania player Patricia Maria Tig in straight sets 6-4 7-6(4) before pulling out over the lingering rift with the organizers over shunning the media.
